Canine Good Citizen (CGC) Obedience Class
to Begin!
WHAT:
Dog Obedience Classes & CGC Test
WHO: The Southern Alliance for Animal Welfare
@ 615-474-8390
WHERE: The Tennessee State Fairgrounds
WHEN: To begin Thursday, April 2nd
and last 7 weeks, to end Thursday, May 14th 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm
We are very
excited to announce that we will be holding a 6-week basic
dog
obedience
class and on the 7th week we will give your dog
the opportunity to
learn
an American Kennel Club (AKC) Canine Good Citizen
Certificate!
The
Tennessee State Fairgrounds has opened their doors for this
class and we couldn’t be more excited to have this ground
breaking class there. There will be signs up the first night
to direct you to the building where this class will be held.
Do you want
to see just what your dog is capable of learning? You might
just be amazed, because every dog can learn and become a
Canine Good Citizen. This basic obedience course will teach
your dog commands such as sit, stay, down and many others.
Please go
to the American Kennel Club website at
www.akc.org for more information on the benefits of CGC
for you and your dog. You can enter CGC in the search bar on
this site. You will have fun, meet other dog lovers and
leave with not only a well-behaved dog but a dog you will
see in a totally different way.
The class
is limited to 15 dogs and their owners.
To register your
dog call Laurie Green at 615-474-8390 or email
green642@bellsouth.net. Dogs must be at least 6 months
old and have proof of their rabies vaccine. Please bring a 5
or 6ft leash, not a retractable leash, please! You may bring
treats for your dog if you wish to train with them. The cost
is only $50.00 for the entire 6 week class and $10.00 for
the CGC test on the 7th week. Payment can be made
by check or cash on the first night of class. We will
provide water for the dogs attending.
See you
there!

SPRING 2009
Spring is right around the corner and gives pet owners a great reason to
schedule a veterinary visit for your pet! For dogs it is a
great time of year to be outside with their humans much more
– but now is the time to have your veterinarian check for
heart worms and get your dog on preventative.
It is also kitten season – the time of year when adult cats start having
litters. And more litters of kittens is not what anyone
needs. The over-population of dogs and cats is horrific here
in Davidson County and you can prevent this by:
·
Having your cat (and dog) fixed!
·
Only adopting from a shelter or reputable animal rescue group
Indeed with spring being looked upon as a new beginning each year let’s
all make a pledge to do our part to make Davidson County a
better place for animals. Here are some suggestions:
·
Schedule a veterinary visit for your pet’s annual check-up.
And while you are there schedule an appointment to get your
pet fixed! SAAW has low-cost alternatives if the cost is too
high.
·
Schedule a grooming appointment or get out the hose and bath
your dog yourself. For cats, or at least mine, they never go
outside so they rarely need a bath but when they do I always
take them to our veterinary clinic for a bath. My cats are
not easy to bath so to reduce stress for them and for me, I
leave this task to the professionals!
·
Brush your dog and cat at least weekly. This is not only good
for their coat but is also a great way to bond with your
pet. Take your time, go slow and enjoy the time with your
dog, cat or bunny.
·
Plan to grab the leash and take your dog for a walk at least
3 times a week. Your dog will love you for this time, and
gosh knows we could all use the exercise and fresh air. And
it is a great way to meet neighbors or other pet lovers if
you go to a nearby park.
·
Never allow your pets to roam at large. Not only are dogs
subject to our Tennessee state’s “at large” law – but the
practice of allowing your pets to roam puts them in
incredible danger. They depend upon you to keep them safe.
Don’t let them down!
·
If you don’t have a pet but have been considering adding a
furry companion to your family, please, never buy from a pet
store or breeder! We have some great places to go – Metro
Animal Care and Control, Nashville Humane Association, or
Happy Tales Humane in Williamson County. And while there are
many rescue groups, and they are a great source as well, the
three mentioned are good places to begin your search. But if
a shelter or rescue group doesn’t require all adopted
animals to be fixed prior to placement then go to one that
does as this also means the animal has been vet checked in
addition to being fixed.
·
Speak up if you see what you feel is animal neglect or abuse.
You can call Metro Animal Care & Control at 615-862-7928 to
report your concerns. You may also contact SAAW if you are
unsure if what you are seeing is neglect and if it fits the
State’s legal definition of neglect. We will help all we
can.
·
And get involved! SAAW Nashville’s mission is only as active
as the monetary donations we receive allows us to be.
Volunteering to organize a fund-raiser is a great way to
feel good about making a positive change for the better for
all local animals. And all donations to SAAW Nashville are
tax-deductible so feel good about giving!

into action for animals!

spay/neuter services. Donations are tax-deductible.
SAAW Nashville is very
interested in speaking to those who have an interest in
being on our board or doing fund-raising for the animals &
pet owners we serve.
SAAW Nashville concentrates on spay/neuter outreach to
homeless and poverty level pet owners. We offer free (for
homeless pet owners, sliding scale for all others!) spay/neuter surgery, rabies
vaccination & tag, collar, and basic vaccinations for both
dogs and cats belonging to homeless pet owners. While not
encouraging pet ownership among the homeless, SAAW Nashville
recognizes that a significant number of homeless individuals
are pet owners. Some folks lost their home, but want to keep
the pet they already had. Others found a stray animal and want
to keep it. Many homeless people want to do right by their pet
although they face greater obstacles. A permanent address does
not necessarily make one a good pet owner, nor does the lack
of a permanent address make one a bad pet owner. SAAW
Nashville tries to sterilize and vaccinate the pets of these
folks and provide pet food whenever possible.
Please
contact SAAW, I just bet we can help you and your pet!

Over 70,000 puppies and kittens are born
each day. (3,000 each hour; 50 each minute.) 15 million animals
per year are killed in pounds and shelters. (41,000 per day; 1,700
per hour; 28 per minute.) It doesn't have to be this way. Find
out how you can help.

The solution is simple: if you have a pet, have it spayed or neutered.
If you find a stray or feral animal in your neighborhood, consider
spending the time and money to have it spayed or neutered and
placed in a lifetime home; don't
just drop it at the nearest shelter. SAAW will assist in the cost
that you incur on behalf of this stray pet! And support/utilize only those shelters that require spay/neutering
as a condition of adoption. Find
