SAAW Nashville

SAAW Nashville will be
participating once again in the Homeless Connect Event on
December 9th! The Southern Alliance for Animal Welfare
will have a booth at this incredible event, and with our
recent grant for s/n services this will be great!
• We will be able to schedule pet owners for s/n and total
vetting on the spot!
• We will have crates and dog sitters available for all
homeless pet owners so that they can take advantage of this
day long event while their pet is safe and sound.
• We will have pet food, collars, leashes and many other pet
care items to give away.
• PetMed, a total pet care facility and our veterinary
partner, will have staff on hand to check your pet over!
Donations to go towards making this the best booth ever
would be so greatly appreciated. As we go into the winter
months we sure could use the extra funds! Your donations are
used to provide veterinary services for homeless pet owners,
and of course this includes spay/neuter. And we greatly need
donations of dog houses and good quality pet food, dry and
canned – WE NEED PET FOOD! And the donation of dog crates is
always appreciated! You can donate online at our website,
www.fixyourpet.org or drop off items such as pet food to
PetMed, located at 1120 Bell Road in Antioch.
Our dedicated mission is to help homeless pet owners take
better care of their pets. We also serve those pet owners
who live at or below the poverty level. We partner with them
so that life might just be a little better for their pets,
while working with homeless outreach workers so that the
lives of their humans can improve as well.
And we all work together so that when they transition into
housing they can move with their pet. As you can imagine,
funding is the one thing we never have enough of but with
the help of your generous donation, SAAW Nashville can make
a difference.
Project Homeless Connect is scheduled for Wednesday,
December 9, 2009 from 8 A.M. to 3 P.M. at the Municipal
Auditorium.
Please call or email me if you would like to be a part of
this incredible event that will serve to help a lot of pets
and their owners who need us the most.
SAAW Nashville appreciates your support!

Update
on our progress for 2009
Serving
homeless pet owners and those who live at or below the
poverty level in Davidson County
The
Southern Alliance for Animal Welfare (SAAW Nashville) has
been busy since 2009 began but thankfully we have seen
progress. We have received 4 grants already this year, and
of course our loyal donors, along with some new ones we’ve
had come on board, have been the driving force behind this
progress.
The
foundation grants received so far this year have included:
- Lovie’s
Legacy - Unrestricted, used for veterinary care
- Lisa Ross
Parker Foundation - Unrestricted, used for veterinary care
- Dwayne Stubblefield, with
Bayer HealthCare - ongoing donation of
Advantage Multi & other flea/tick treatments.
- Onyx &
Breezy Foundation - Dedicated donation of Walmart gift
card
The folks
listed above, along with the private donors, deserve our
thanks because it is because of them that we are able to
serve the pets and their guardians as they struggle to keep
their lives together.
We must
also mention our ongoing relationship with Dr. Mark Girone,
owner of PetMed Veterinary
Clinic. It is because of Dr. Girone that we were able to
secure the grant from Dwayne Stubblefield, Senior Technical
Sales Specialist with Bayer HealthCare.
|
Already this year we
have had 46 animals totally vetted (this always
includes spaying or neutering), we have treated and
saved the lives of 11 (one for a knife wound), we
have had 32 surrendered to us and placed into rescue
and continued on with our commitment to a better
world for these animals. That number now includes
Miller the rooster! In addition we have made sure
that the pet owners we serve have access to pet
food, cat litter and other necessities if they are
unable to purchase these pet needs on their own. We
have a very active pet food bank that now serves
between 40-60 pets each month! In addition we treat
each animal we serve with either Advantage Multi,
Frontline or Panacur. And although these are not
high numbers as some organizations count, they are
significant because they are animals who no one
would even know existed if it were not for SAAW.
We are determined to give a face and a name to
animals that most in our community never knew
existed. And there are more animals out there
that we have not yet reached out to nor found.
Your donations will allow us to more aggressively
look for them. Your donation will give more a
chance at a better life. |
But with
all of this generosity, our funds continue to fall behind
the calls for help, and cannot serve all who ask us for
assistance. The needs for the area we serve; pet owners who
are homeless or live at or below the poverty level, are
greater than you could ever realize. We have the choice of
judging or helping. Judging serves no one any good and does
not help the animal or their guardian. By extending a
helping hand and partnering with these pet guardians, we
help them both.
So we are
asking you to partner with SAAW Nashville so that our
outreach can grow. We want to be there for all who need the
unique niche we serve. No other animal group in Nashville
hits the streets like we do. And we can do this, but not
without you. Please become a dedicated partner to SAAW
Nashville. Secured donations can be made on our website at
www.fixyourpet.org. If you prefer to mail your donations
in, our address is listed on our website. Please partner
with us so that together we can help so many more animals.

Basic Dog Obedience Class a success!
SAAW
Nashville had a great time at our 1st Basic Dog
Obedience Class! I have held so many classes, but I have to
say this was the best. And we have to give a huge thanks to
the Tennessee State Fairground staff, especially Buck
Dozier, Steve Burton and Deborah Dorman. They were
fantastic, their location was so convenient for all, and the
space they gave us worked fantastically!
We had 13
dogs in all, and our graduation night was so much fun. To
see dogs and their guardians discover the potential that
this relationship has is so very rewarding. There is not a
dog that cannot learn; there are only guardians who won’t
give them a chance.
We had 3
that went on to the 7th night to earn their
Canine Good Citizen certificate! How exciting is that?
SAAW also
wants to thank Mary Burch with the American Kennel Club for
all of her help and advice. AKC was very helpful to us in
this class and donated the materials for it.
We are
planning another class, so stay tuned for dates and times.

AS
OUR DONATIONS INCREASE, OUR SPAY/NEUTER CERTIFICATE PRICES CAN

PUTTING HEALTHY ANIMALS DOWN!
Male

Female dog $75.00
Male cat $41.00
Female cat $50.00
The resuming of SAAW services
is due to the dedication of our faithful donors. The more
donations we receive, the greater our ability to offer reduced
spay/neuter services. Donations are tax-deductible.
SAAW Nashville is very
interested in speaking to those who have an interest in
being on our board or doing fund-raising for the animals &
pet owners we serve.
SAAW Nashville concentrates on spay/neuter outreach to
homeless and poverty level pet owners. We offer free (for
homeless pet owners, sliding scale for all others!) spay/neuter surgery, rabies
vaccination & tag, collar, and basic vaccinations for both
dogs and cats belonging to homeless pet owners. While not
encouraging pet ownership among the homeless, SAAW Nashville
recognizes that a significant number of homeless individuals
are pet owners. Some folks lost their home, but want to keep
the pet they already had. Others found a stray animal and want
to keep it. Many homeless people want to do right by their pet
although they face greater obstacles. A permanent address does
not necessarily make one a good pet owner, nor does the lack
of a permanent address make one a bad pet owner. SAAW
Nashville tries to sterilize and vaccinate the pets of these
folks and provide pet food whenever possible.
Please
contact SAAW, I just bet we can help you and your pet!

Over 70,000 puppies and kittens are born
each day. (3,000 each hour; 50 each minute.) 15 million animals
per year are killed in pounds and shelters. (41,000 per day; 1,700
per hour; 28 per minute.) It doesn't have to be this way. Find
out how you can help.

The solution is simple: if you have a pet, have it spayed or neutered.
If you find a stray or feral animal in your neighborhood, consider
spending the time and money to have it spayed or neutered and
placed in a lifetime home; don't
just drop it at the nearest shelter. SAAW will assist in the cost
that you incur on behalf of this stray pet! And support/utilize only those shelters that require spay/neutering
as a condition of adoption. Find
