Spay/Neuter Certificates
| Spay/Neuter Facts, Excuses & Myths

SAAW offers spay/neuter certificates as a service to Nashville and surrounding counties. SAAW makes no money from the sale of the certificates; in fact, we pay the administrative costs for the service. If you would like to make a tax-deductible donation to help SAAW continue to administer this program please send a check payable to SAAW at P.O. Box 23535, Nashville, TN, 37202 or make a secured, online donation. We appreciate your support!

We need your tax-deductible donations in 2007 to continue our progress. 2006 saw more pet owners than ever reaching out to us to assist them in fixing their pet. The animals need us, but we need you!

Certificate prices are subject to change based on availability of funds.

Male dog $54.00
Female dog $75.00
Male cat $41.00
Female cat $50.00

These certificates pay for the sterilization surgery. However, females who are pregnant or in heat may incur an extra charge. This certificate does not include vaccinations, which may be required by the veterinary clinic. It is very important to have your pets vaccinated. And remember, yearly rabies vaccines are required by Tennessee state law for dogs and cats! You must have the pre-paid certificate before making an appointment for your pet. Please call 474-8390 for more information or details on how purchase the certificates. Save money and keep your pet from adding to the over-population tragedy! Checks and money orders should be made payable to "Friends of Animals". FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE IS AVAILABLE FOR PET-OWNERS WHO NEED A HELPING HAND.

SPAY AND NEUTER: Facts, Excuses & Myths

My pet will get fat and lazy.

It's better to have one litter first.

But my pet is a purebred.

I want my dog to be protective.

I don't want my male dog or cat to feel less of a male.

I'll find good homes for the puppies and kittens!

It's too expensive to have my pet spayed or neutered.

My pet will get fat and lazy.
The truth is that most pets get fat and lazy because their owners feed them too much and don't give them enough exercise.

It's better to have one litter first.
Medical evidence indicates just the opposite. In fact, the evidence shows that females spayed before their first heat are healthier. And cancer risks are reduced for males and females.

But my pet is a purebred.
So is at least one out of every four animals brought to shelters and animal control facilities. There are just too many dogs and cats - mixed breed and purebred.

I want my dog to be protective.
Spaying and neutering does not affect a dog's natural instincts to protect its home and family. A dog's personality is formed by genetics first, plus the dogs environment but not its sex hormones.

I don't want my male dog or cat to feel less of a male.
Oh please! Pets don't have any concept of sexual identity or ego. Neutering a male dog or cat will not change its basic personality. Your dog will remain protective of its home. It can't comprehend having an emotional reaction or identity crisis when neutered.

I'll find good homes for the puppies and kittens!
You may find homes for all, or most, of your pet's litter. What you may not think about is that, in less than one year's time, each one of your pet's litter probably has produced its own litter, adding more and more animals to the over-population epidemic. The problem of pet over-population is made and perpetuated one litter at a time.

It's too expensive to have my pet spayed or neutered.
The cost of spaying and neutering does depend on too many variables - the sex, size and age of your animal, the veterinarian's fees in addition to the surgery, etc. BUT WE HAVE LOW-COST SPAY/NEUTER CERTIFICATES AVAILABLE AS WELL AS FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE. Whatever the actual price, however, it is a one-time cost and small when compared to the benefits. It's also a bargain compared to the cost of having a litter and ensuring the health of the female animal and her litter, 2 months of pregnancy and another 2 months until the litter is weaned. This adds up to a high veterinary bill and food cost, and doesn't even account for medical complications. But most important, it's a small price to pay for the health of your pet and the prevention of more homeless animals.

We are a 501C3 charity and all donations are tax-deductible.
