What are some frequently asked questions
regarding The Southern Alliance for Animal Welfare and our FOA
(Friend's of Animals) low cost spay/neuter certificate program?
1. The certificates pay (in entirety)
for the spay/neuter surgery. It also pays for the exam prior to the
surgery, so there should not be an exam fee. It pays for an
overnight stay - but only if this is the policy of the veterinary
clinic you choose. It pays for suture removal in 10-14 days as well.
2. It does not pay for vaccines or tests such as heartworm for dogs
or the FIV/Fe-Leuk combo for cats. SAAW seeks to make the
certificate cost so low that you are able to afford these to be done
for your pet.
3. Remember that by Tennessee state law, all dogs and cats over the
age of 6 months are required to receive a yearly rabies vaccine. The
veterinary clinic has every right to require this vaccine to be
given. It protects your pet and you from this deadly disease!
4. You may incur an extra fee if your female is pregnant or in heat.
Let us know if that may be the case - we will work with you if you
need the certificate price lowered. Please don't wait for your cat
to cycle out of heat - go on and have her fixed! Dogs can also be
spayed during their heat cycle.
5. You may be asked if you want a "blood panel" or
"blood screening" performed prior to the s/n surgery. If
your pet is under the age of 8 years and otherwise healthy, this is
not a necessary test and will be an additional cost.
6. Most male animals have no need for pain medications, and often
females don't as well. I always specify, however, that I will okay
this charge if the veterinarian feels it is needed. Pain meds
generally run in the 10 to 12 dollar range, not a significant cost.
7. Always ask questions if there is something you are unsure of!
SAAW and the veterinary clinics participating in this program care
about your animal and will take the time to answer your questions!
8. The certificates are good for 1 year from the issue date. If lost
please call and we can void and reissue.
9. Please note that having a cat declawed is often painful and can
result in behavior problems. These FOA certificates are not valid if
the bearer requests declawing.
10. Consideration will be given to pet owners or rescue folks if the
certificate price on SAAW's website is more than they can afford.
11. For anyone seeking a charity that they can feel good about
supporting, please consider The Southern Alliance for Animal
Welfare. The animals need SAAW, and we need you! All donations are
tax-deductible.
