Winter
pet tips
Would you trade places with
your pet during the winter months? Honestly? Here's a
checklist to see if you're telling the truth!
1. Your dog's house is clean,
filled with cedar shavings and has a cover over the doorway to
keep the warmth inside. It faces away from the north wind.
2. When the weather is really cold your dog stays inside with
you.
3. Your dog has a little vegetable oil added to their dry food
to help
prevent dry, itchy skin.
4. Water is always checked to make sure it isn't frozen.
5. If the antifreeze you use is not "pet safe" you
make sure to use it only where your pet does not have access
to.
6. Your cat isn't allowed outside (we hope!) unless under your
watchful eye, so you don't have to worry about their safety.
7. For cat's whose human isn't so responsible, you take care
to always knock on the top of your car if a lot of strays live
in your neighborhood. Cats have been known to crawl up inside
of a car engine because of the warmth coming from it. If they
don't wake up in time the next time you start your car, the
resulting tragedy is pretty horrific.
8. And you provide water and food for those unfortunate stray
cats. Plus shelter because you go the extra mile, even for
animals that don't even belong to you.
Yes, SAAW is aware that it is
not "recommended" that you provide food and water
for strays. But how can you not, especially during the frigid
winter months? However, if you live in an area where coyotes
have been spotted, it isn't a good idea. But always err on the
side of compassion, both with your own pets as well as the
stray ones you encounter.

Nashville/Davidson County chapter.
SAAW Nashville concentrates on spay/neuter outreach to
homeless pet owners. We offer free spay/neuter surgery, rabies
vaccination & tag, collar, and basic vaccinations for both
dogs and cats belonging to homeless pet owners. While not
encouraging pet ownership among the homeless, SAAW Nashville
recognizes that a significant number of homeless individuals
are pet owners. Some folks lost their home, but want to keep
the pet they already had. Others found a stray animal and want
to keep it. Many homeless people want to do right by their pet
although they face greater obstacles. A permanent address does
not necessarily make one a good pet owner, nor does the lack
of a permanent address make one a bad pet owner. SAAW
Nashville tries to sterilize and vaccinate the pets of these
folks and provide pet food whenever possible.

The Southern Alliance for Animal Welfare

Over 70,000 puppies and kittens are born
each day. (3,000 each hour; 50 each minute.) 15 million animals
per year are killed in pounds and shelters. (41,000 per day; 1,700
per hour; 28 per minute.) It doesn't have to be this way. Find
out how you can help.

The solution is simple: if you have a pet, have it spayed or neutered.
If you find a stray or feral animal in your neighborhood, consider
spending the time and money to have it spayed or neutered and
placed in a lifetime home; don't
just drop it at the nearest shelter. SAAW will assist in the cost
that you incur on behalf of this stray pet! And support/utilize only those shelters that require spay/neutering
as a condition of adoption. Find
